Ayutthaya 1520

The next steps in Rama T'ibodi's diplomatic expansion of the Thai Empire came with the vassalization of Lan Na (blue green) in 1521, followed by the annexation of Mon (light brown) in 1526. In 1532 Da Nang converted from Hinduism to Buddhism, leaving Sunni Da Lat as the only non-Buddhist province in the Empire. In 1542 Lan Na also accepted annexation. The Shan States (dark grey) repeatedly refused vassalization, however, so in 1562 Ayutthaya invaded and annexed them by force. In 1567 the Thai Empire declared war on Bengal (dark green) in response to a diplomatic insult. Two years later the Bengalis ceded Tarakan and the trading centre in Santal to Ayutthaya for peace. By now Ayutthayan merchants were able to establish monopolies, and had done so at times in Malacca, Guangdong, Santal and Goa. By 1570 the Empire's income had reached 74.9 per month. With the conversion of Da Lat in 1568, the only non-Buddhist provinces were those newly taken from Bengal which were Sunni.
